About Barbara

Compassionate, supportive and guiding.

I came to this work through love — through sitting with people I cherished as they moved toward death, and discovering that presence  is what matters most.

Barbara Thomsen, end-of-life doula

How I came to this work

My path to end of life doula work began not in a classroom, but at a bedside. Over the years I have sat with family members, clients and dear friends as they died — sometimes peacefully, sometimes with great difficulty — and I came to understand that the quality of a death is shaped not only by medicine, but by presence, by witness, and by love.

What I noticed, again and again, was how unprepared most of us are for this passage. We live in a culture that turns away from death, and so when it arrives — as it always does — we can be frightened, isolated, and unsure how to help. I wanted to change that, one family at a time.

I completed my end of life doula training and have since dedicated myself to accompanying individuals and families through the final chapter with care, dignity, and deep respect for each person's unique journey.   I came to my doula training after my rewarding career as a social worker in Canada and Germany. Gaining expensive experience supporting diverse clients, including those with physical and cognitive challenges, acquired brain injuries, and dementia.  I approach this work as a path of service. To this path, I bring my professional experience, and the open heart of a mother and grandmother. This work is deeply meaningful for me and I believe it has a sacredness to it.  I would be honored to walk with you on your journey.

Philosophy

What I believe

Death is not a failure

Dying is a natural part of life. When we meet it with openness rather than fear, it can become one of the most profound and even beautiful experiences a human being can have.

Every death is unique

There is no single right way to die, and no single right way to grieve. I follow your lead, honour your values, and hold space for whatever this passage looks like for you and your family.

Presence is the gift

I do not come with a checklist or a script. I come with my full attention, my steady presence, and my willingness to sit in the uncertainty alongside you — for as long as you need.

Background

Training & approach

I am a trained end of life doula based in British Columbia. My training has given me a foundation in the practical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of dying — from advance care planning and vigil support to grief accompaniment and legacy work. But the deepest part of my education has come from the people I have sat with, and from the quiet wisdom that lives at the threshold of life and death.
